Nostalgia Trap

Lately I've been stuck in a bit of a nostalgia trip. Last night I watched a few episodes of Magic School Bus and I just finished watching the old Disney movie, Don't Look Under the Bed. And do you know what? I still enjoyed them. And I DO wish these shows were still readily available for viewing at any given time, especially over what the people of today seem to watch.

Even without the nostalgia goggles, there were some decent things in these two bits from my past. For one, they talked about more mature scientific elements without stopping to explain them or even acknowledge that they were "smart people" stuff. For example, in Don't Look Under the Bed, Larry the imaginary friend makes the argument that you can't see air, gravity, and ATOMS and they just continue like it's normal. They don't stop to emphasize atoms or anything, but the fact they stated it like every day knowledge when now it wouldn't even be considered.

The plot was more deep than from what I have seen from the shows they have today. Most of the Hannah Montana episodes I have watched (mostly just as background noise) had very shallow messages. But this one had to deal with how growing older doesn't mean abandoning your childhood, something that can apply to both adults and children watching the movie.

And even Magic School Bus continued to teach without being obnoxious and in your face. Plot first, facts second, but decent with both. One problem with the show though is that characters tend to get lost in the stories, but as it is a series with multiple episodes each character can get a different focus in each episode.

Plus who didn't smile to themselves in science class because they remembers "Magic School Bus taught me this! Thank you Miss Frizzle!"

Goddamn nostalgia.

All this typing and not a soul to read....

Yeah it's been a while since I've posted anything. Been busy and distracted with collegey stuff. Yay! Anyways, I'm mostly logging in to rant about something that's bothering me.

The fucking Academy Awards.

Mostly for two movies that were snubbed, since I unfortunately haven't seen many of the nominated movies. (Going to see Social Network soon at school theater though...)

First off is Shutter Island.

Direction. Editing. Adapted Screen Play (I believe it was a book but it's past my bed time and I am too lazy to look). Hell, even Best Actor.  Watching the movie with two family members who actually work directly with patients in a mental hospital really showed me how much the actors worked to portray things and even the historical aspects of some of the treatments were amazing. Plus there were cased of make up that were truly unique.

Though I can't harp on make up too much since Zombieland was snubbed for make up last year (and yes, I am quite aware that gore make up is some of the easiest to do, but it still took quite an effort.)

And now for the major movie that I feel was snubbed, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

I can live without best movie.

I can live without best actor/actress.

I can live without best director, editing, sound, even original song (although Black Sheep has been played a ridiculous amount of times on my Ipod). Not to mention best ADAPTED SCREENPLAY (Condensing a six volume comic book into a two hour movie and still keeping some things the same [the opening for instance and even Scott's curly hat that when I read some of the first volume minutes before heading to the theater I demanded be in it]...)

But there's no way I can forgive them for snubbing it for best Visual Effects. It had more style and charm than Harry Potter (and I am a huge Potter head, ask anyone who knows me). Harry Potter was more or less the same visuals it had given us before but with updates along with technology. Scott Pilgrim transfered comic into the big screen and gave some of the most aesthetically appealing fight scenes I have ever scene.

Harry Potter had a Patronus Cat, Scott Pilgrim had Demon Hipster Chicks.

Harry Potter had Naked Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliff making out in black chaos, Scott Pilgrim had Michael Cera hovering while playing the bass after his character's first kiss with the female lead.

Harry Potter had wands shooting pretty colors at each other, Scott Pilgrim had an epic bass battle (for some reason I love the plastic cups in that scene....)

Harry Potter had Voldemort's Wand Snapping. Scott Pilgrim had Gideon swallow his gum! Okay... maybe not that one so much.

Maybe it's because Scott Pilgrim didn't use 3D?

Anyways,  I had to think of where HP showed off it's visual effects in a way that stood out in my mind where Scott Pilgrim's effects were bold and beautiful. I loved both movies, and wish both got more nominations over some other movies, but I do think that the Academy Awards are getting away from awarding movies that deserve it and just catering to what's popular, and even then with some biases. After all, people are up in arms about Nolan being snubbed (I haven't seen Inception so I have no idea). Scott Pilgrim was technically a flop and didn't do as well as hoped, yet it was praised by critics and is already achieving cult classic.

I guess my half awake ranting has gone long enough. But to continue my reasons that the Academy doesn't know what it's talking about at times, last year they put Twilight in a freakin' horror movie montage, when it's more of a Fantasy/Drama (from an unbiased perspective.... a biased perspective would put it under campy comedies that don't deserve the light of day.)
